Ruffles

Ruffles can be constructed using a single or double layer of fabric. When sewing ruffles onto corners, gather the fabric more tightly at the corners to allow the ruffle to lay smoothly around the corner.

For single layer ruffles:
Cut strips to finished width plus seam and hem allowance. Piece together shorter fabric lengths to create a ruffle 2-2 1/2 times longer than garment or project edge. If making a continuous ruffle, with right sides together, sew across short ends of ruffle piece. Hem one long edge of fabric. Sew two rows of gathering stitches on either side of the seamline on the remaining raw edge. Pull gathering stitches up to fit required space. Pin in place and stitch.

For double layer ruffles:
Cut strips twice finished width plus seam allowances. If making a continuous ruffle, with right sides together, sew across short ends of ruffle piece. Fold in half and press. Sew two rows of gathering stitches on either side of the seamline on the remaining raw edge. Pull gathering stitches up to fit required space. Pin in place and stitch.
